If people read their history books more and listened to government spin less, "belief" wouldn't enter into issues like this. For more than 80 years, US foreign policy in the Middle East has been entirely about destabilisation.
Ironic too, considering the way we have been sold Iraq as an exercise in democratisation, not only that Israel is contemplating this move, but that the non-democratic and very unpopular regimes in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, our only other allies in the region, would likely have been overthrown years ago without US support.
