If the average is around 500mbps the spikes will be above 1gbps sometimes. With the average at 900mbps the spikes will be way over 1gbps. Sure TCP/IP will handle it but the speed the users can except will be very varied...

heh, i'm sure glad i'm not the only one to notice that. isn't the rule of thumb something like you don't want to go over 70% of the pipe capacity to keep latency down?
