I agree with you completely, and since I rarely make it out to theatres anymore, that usually isn't much of a problem. The thin line between making fans anticipate vs. showing too much ... or in the case of "300" a movie that contained scenes specifically for the trailer.
Cloverfield is interesting in trying to show trailers that really tease you - a monster you never see. And the only ad I saw for I Am Legend just hinted poor Will wasn't alone (but gives no idea "what" else is out there).
