Also, don't forget acquisitions. When we acquire a company, we keep the name servers as is. In order to get a full and complete count, not only would you have to know the facts that you stated (hosting companies hosted in our data center, private name servers, etc) but you would also have to query all the name servers that came over from acquisitions.

The last time I took the time to query all of our name servers, I counted over 200,000 domains. This number does not include colo or name servers that we don't manage so the number is not an accurate reflection of the number of actual sites we host. I'm sure it's true in your case also.
