I have known of companies (not saying AEBN is doing it at all) that have paid those prices and lost only to force competition out.
The other thing is a lot of listings are AEBN's WMs, not AEBN themselves. So the WMs must be making some good cash with AEBN to keep forking over those prices.
And yes, VOD keywords are that expensive.
