Your first real statement with the guy was an insult and a demand... if somebody did that to you, how would you reply? There was a tactful way to go about that situation, what you did was not it.

Try something like:
Hi, I would like to promote some of your sites. I was looking through your content and I can't quite find the right material for what I am planning on doing... would you be able to help me out? What I really need is XYZ. Is that possible?
