Establish a "home base" and travel from there. I would not recommend anyplace on the pound system however... you can live way cheaper in other parts of Europe. I'm not big on learning foreign languages, however.

London is the most expensive place in Europe, if I don't count Moscow.
I've been to over 20 different countries, lots of great places to remember.
Marseille, Barcelona, Berlin, Amsterdam among my favourite cities.
