"pretty" typically causes more people to click around more, but has little to do with actual conversions and more often than not, can hurt conversions because its drawing eyes/attention away from the very thing you're trying to get the user to look at. its all about what the user is looking for and whether or not you're showing it to him.

I agree, up to a point. I still make sales with a hideous bitch of a site that I built in 1999 and have never updated since (apart from links that is).
But in my opinion, in the days of Web 2.0 webcam surfers have come to expect a somewhat more upscale-looking site. On the other hand it all depends heavily on the demographics of your traffic as well.
