There is a famous line in a Nirvana song where he sings, "I got so high I scratched till I bled."
On a more serious note, if you get a rash there is a decent chance you are allergic to the codeine. A few years ago I got really sick and the doctor gave me cough syrup with codeine and I broke out in a pretty nasty rash. I took an allergy tablet and it fixed the problem. Now I just have to avoid opiate based pain killers.
