Has anyone else had experience with a similar situation, but managed to find a less pharmaceutical solution?

Yes. I have a weiner dog that was itching the fur bai to the skin. No fleas, ticks or anything. A family friend suggested a teaspoon of sunflower oil in with the dogs food once per day. The dog also takes one Benadryl per day. I'm not sure which one is working, but it has seemed to help tremendously.
Good luck Elli!
