To me this is a pretty cut and dry situation.
First, if Letterman and his writers made a mistake and thought it was the older girl with Palin, but made the joke about the younger one on accident he was wrong - he should have done his homework. He says he meant the older one even though it was the younger one with her. So in a round about way he apologized. She has every right to defend her kid and bash him for what he said. A 14 year old kid should be off limits.
If the joke was actually aimed at the older kid then it is fair game. The older kid is now 18 years old and has turned herself into a public figure. She has become a national spokesperson for teen pregnancy awareness and has made the rounds on the talk shows as well as giving interviews to many different magazines. If you are going to get knocked up at 17 and then use that fact to become a public figure you should expect that someone might take a shot or two at you. That said Palin can still defend her daughter.
Where this goes off the rails is what has since happened. Palin wants desperately to be one of the leaders of the republican party. She is part of the group that wants to hearken back to the days where the culture war raged. Where the republican party was owned and ran by the hardcore conservative christian right. So she has jumped all over this. She has made the rounds on the shows, in papers and anywhere there is a camera speaking out about how, "Liberal Hollywood" is attacking kids. Liberal Hollywood didn't attack anyone. A talk show host made a joke. Maybe it was a bad joke. Maybe it wasn't appropriate, but it was one person saying one thing. She is using this topic to now stir up the culture war again and try to fire up the conservative christian base of the party. She has turned it into a much bigger issue than it needed to be. Letterman made a joke. She and her husband bashed him and he apologized. That should be where it ends. She is now on a crusade to make sure everyone in the free world knows what happened and to me that is just as despicable as any joke about A-rod knocking up a 14 year old.
