I think you should have taken his offer for the easy way, as much as I understand your frustration of those content thieves getting away with shit and all, in the end it would have been the most swift way.
Writing on boards like these will get you pro and contra responses but no solution!
There are many discussions about content thieves and how to handle them, but simply said, if you ain't got the time and money to prosecute them then just DMCA them.
If you have to DMCA the same website like 50 times a month, you've got a strong basis for prosecuting them like this other guy did. (forgot his name, other GFY topic here)
