If you want it gone, not able to recover any data, you need to physically destroy the drive.
Big companies have expensive hard drive shredders that will shred the drive. For someone at home your best bet is to take the drive apart, and drill holes in the platters. A sander or grinder or something that will fuck up the platter surface would be nice to use in addition to the holes.
