LYON, France - French police have recovered most of an 11.6 million euro ($17.4 million) cash haul that they suspect was stolen by a security van driver last week, a state prosecutor said on Monday.
Prosecutor Xavier Richaud said police found 9.2 million euros hidden in a garage that the driver, Toni Musulin, had rented under a false name.
Musulin was working for a security firm in the southern city of Lyon when he vanished on Nov. 5 in an armoured van loaded with cash from the Bank of France.
Police originally thought he might have been kidnapped by gangsters, but soon found out that that Musulin?s flat had been cleared and his bank account emptied days before the robbery.
"He (Musulin) is still on the run with more than 2 million euros," Richaud told reporters.
Musulin has become a household name in France, with fan clubs popping up across the Internet.
Media commentators called it the perfect crime and police speculated at first that he might have already escaped abroad. But the garage was only rented until December, meaning Musulin clearly expected to return to the Lyon area to get his stash.
If he is caught, Musulin faces a maximum three-year prison term because he did not use violence to steal the cash.
