While there is no way the guy should have been charged or go to prison, it was kinda stupid picking the gun up and taking it to the police station.
If I found a gun in my back garden, there's no way I'd touch it. I'd ring the cops and let them come collect it. You'd have no idea what the gun was used for and having your fingerprints on it or smudging existing prints would be a risk I wouldn't be willing to take.
