Mainstream religion was just a way of controlling the uneducated population at a time when nearly everybody could not read or write. As an example, although it seems to often be misinterpreted by lunatics, you only have to read some of the Koran to see that it is just attempting to substitute for peoples lack of education / lack of common sense and covers very basic things like hygiene.
