for automated emails like registration and opt in stuff i prefer to use my own mail system.
but for peoples personal email you should use google mail
reason being is that google can and will suspend email accoutns that it thinks are spamming. i dont think it takes too many people to hit the spam button in their gmail to get the account suspended
