So they spend all this money but users can opt-out if they don't want to walk thru. I'm pretty sure that you can patted-down anyway regardless of whether or not you use the machine anyway so whats the point?

Also I wonder if they're required to state how much radiation you get from these things?

According to the manufacturer, this particular device exposes you to the same amount of X-rays as flying in an airplane does is therefore safer then actually flying in an airplane as far as radiation exposure goes.

I'm skeptical though because while you are technically exposed to more X-ray radiation (from the sun) when flying, the amount varies depending on the position of the sun, cloud cover, solar flares, etc. There's also the earth's own atmosphere and Magnetosphere that protects us.

I'm pretty sure that these machines are safe for occasional travellers, but what about frequent flyers who have to be exposed to this thing more often?

To me, these machines are yet another useless knee-jerk reaction driven only by fear. I don't think they will do anything to stop air terrorism, and instead only drive up the price of flying and increase the tension of flyers everywhere.
