I don't know what Russian mafia is. Here in Russia we have a special acronym for organized crime: "

As far as I know, the NYC people are used to give this name ("Russian Mafia") to the organized criminal groups consisting of former exUSSR citizens preliminary of Jewish nationality. As far as you may know, the only Jews were able to leave the USSR in 70s-80s of the 20th century. They were using the standard immigration scheme: USSR->Israel->USA (NYC, Brighton). This what the US "Russian Mafia" is. I don't know why Americans call it "Mafia" (firstly it's an Italic word, secondly it has a different meaning than the just organized criminal groups) and I don't know what they cal it "Russian"...
