I use full disk encryption so it's pretty much useless because the thief cannot access the o/s. I've installed LogmeIn.com on my room mates quadcore, that isn't running full disk encryption, with the thinking if somebody breaks in and if all our computers are gone, the same person probably stole them all. LogMeIn.com is free and will display the last known external IP address of the computer running the agent.
