Even if the job to add or remove some hardware inside of the machine is not very hard one has to be quite careful. If for example static electricity touches part of the motherboard or for example the RAM holder or so, that can cause it to not work due to being short circuited once.
Always make sure you are not wearing a pull over, a fleece jacket, wool socks or orther type of clothing that will charge you up with static eletricity. Then touch a radiator, possibly your bathroom tap or other fixed installation which will ground you. Do this just before touching anything inside the computer.
Only way to know if something is damaged, is to do exactly as suggested yourself, strip out everything but HDD and RAM and then start to see if it boots up. Are you able to get into BIOS? If so, set as many options as possible to "Auto detect" to make it find any and all new hardware.
