Although you're talking about NOW, I don't for one second doubt that geocities sites with hideous blinking garbage MADE MONEY back in 1996. People would click on anything back then.
Just based on the discussion on the thread here about Geocities finally being closed by Yahoo, many adult webmasters got started on GC due to free hosting back in the day.
