the number came from assuming technology would accelerate just as fast as technology accererated when format shifting drop down the price of solid state disk
the technlogical improvements perculated thru every computer technlogy from cpu to memory to hard drives.
Try adding up all the computer electronics as a portion of GDP convert it to 1982 dollars and subtract the computerized industry of that time.
from cellphones to camera to even cars and farming equipment you would be hard pressed to find a single device that has not improved because format shifting comercialied and commodized solid state disk.
