Malick doesn't make typical Hollywood paint by numbers movies, which imo Saving Private Ryan is - a big hoooo rahhhhhh for war that was cliché ridden and good only because the action was so viscerally filmed. "Thin Red Line" is the anti-thesis of that and much more emotionally charged without the push your easy emotional buttons approach Speilberg loves. Malick's movie subverts all those Hollywood war movie stereotypes which is why I think many people don't like it because it is such unfamiliar territory.
But that is just my opinion... wtf do I know?
