Actually this is paid for by the EMPLOYER not the EMPLOYEE. The rate is 6.2% on the first $7000 of wages in a year. That's $434 a year. Even if this amount had been the same for the last 25 years( and it's not, it was LOWER ) someone out of work after 25 years would have paid( well not him, but his employer ) $11,000 total. If that worker gets $1000 a month unemployment within 1 year he's getting $12,000 even though he paid at most $11,000.
