The most powerful people in the world realize that 99% of humans simply wait for opinions to be presented to them by others. This is why they build media empires
This allows them to basically get away with just about whatever they want. All the media tycoons have to do is instruct their minions to repeat the same opinions over and over and the sheep eventually make themselves believe that they came up with the ideas in the first place.
Their power is so great they can assassinate a whistle blower in his own home just days before the MPs "grill" Murdoch. Talk about a warning to those silly politicians who think this might be a chance to blow the lid off who is really behind people like Murdoch.
