When you cross the road the driver has a responsibility to stop and/or avoid hitting you.
By the same token you, as a pedestrian, have a responsibility to cross at a cross walk, and not in the middle of a busy street.
You can't hold drivers responsible if someone just walks out into traffic, or there would be total chaos on the roads.
