For small arms and easy to use, I would recommend the Walther PPK. Walther, Sig and Glock make what i think are the best hand guns out there however, the Ruger makes a good gun for the value. Kimber Arms is a good gun but the price is a bit out of line and is more for the look than the function.
The Baretta Px4 is a great small 40 cal as I would not go as far as a 9MM or .45 for your wife.
Make sure you also get one with a rail to mount a light. For home protection, a light is key except on a .308 you wont get a lot with rail space.
I use my PPK as my canceled carry arms and a 9 MM next to the bed but for those front door surprises, I prefer a Mossberg 500 Persuader.
