Now I look back on it, with 4 decades in porn, I wonder what my thoughts were then. I never thought of what I was doing as a huge crime. I was merely involved in the organisation. Tom occasionally told me to get out of the shop after a call or when I went in told me to get out. I knew this to mean the heat was coming down and it was best for me to make myself scarce. Never thought of the consequences. As a 16-18 year old, you never do. You’re just having a bit of fun. As for the UK laws on porn, well today they are absurd to the point of idiocy. To sell a porn movie porn shop has to be licensed, which costs money. To sell a porn film legally in the UK it has to be certificated by the BBFC handling fees. Handling fee £75 per submission plus £6.00 per minute for full length of work. Which means a 90 minute DVD costs £615 just to license one DVD with 5 scenes.

Add the production costs or license costs for overseas produced movies the cost is a lot compared with the sales of a DVD. It’s to “control” the flood of porn into the UK. Which means those that shaped and continue to uphold this law have no clue of what the Internet is. Even though they use it themselves to list laws and put up information. And anyone can go online and access what porn they like or open a site and publish what porn they like. Well within certain boundaries.
