You need to go off and do your own thing. Do your own tests, your own experiments, and make friends. With your friends you can share ideas and results, you'll actually learn a lot and it's unlikely that they will feed you bad information.

Spend more time testing and less time reading. As your own knowledge grows, you'll be able to see through the BS of self proclaimed gurus.
