The Bay Area has been hit by a rash of incidents where people are tampering with the self checkout stand credit/debit card readers in order to steal information from shoppers:

Modesto-based Save Mart is warning customers at several of its Bay Area supermarkets that their personal banking information may have been compromised.
The company issued a news release Wednesday saying that while doing routine maintenance, store employees found credit, debit card readers that had been tampered with in the self-checkout lanes of 19 Lucky stores and one Save Mart store.
Its stores in San Jose, two Luckys in Fremont and one each in Santa Clara, Milpitas, Alameda, El Cerrito, Pinole, Redwood City and Mountain View were affected, as was a Save Mart in Watsonville.
The company said the tampered card readers were replaced and that enhanced security was added to all of its 234 stores.
