Many of the drones flown in various places around the world are flown by controllers in the CONUS so being "out of range" is very unlikely. Of course losing a signal would follow under a destruct device failure and I have already stated that this is a possibility.
What they publically state about any military event often...if not most times...has little significance to the truth.
