I have a 1 year old now, so I'm going to list the weird things we got that helped a LOT when my daughter was born:
teething toys
a "mommy clip" (it's a huge ass clip that looks like a rock climber)
a warmer for wipes (it's like 20$, and saves me a lot of screaming)
a gift certificate for a night out (that first month = little rest, good to get out)
a case of beer for the dad (put a bow on it, and now it's classy san diego)
dr browns bottle warmer
a "glider" (not a rocking chair)
a nice playmat....we got the wagamama baby zabu (

don't worry about toys. for the first few weeks, the baby can't really do anything but look up. probably the gift i liked the most was that wagamama playmat because it gave you 10 seconds to run to the bathroom to piss knowing that your daughter can't roll out of the mat she's on.
my daughter's favorite? wipe warmer. if you use cold wipes on her now, she SCREAMS
