Who said that he was 'an epitome of free speech'? I saw a guy who had 2000 followers in twitter under his real name and he twitted things like 'Putin is a faggot' and when asked why he replied that it's because there is no freedom of speech in Russia. Look, writing an article in spiegel it is really easy to turn the story around whichever way you want, any decent journalist can do it (which is why I hate them) for example in Russian state owned media this story is portrayed completely different, so my opinion is that we shouldn't judge people in other countries based on tabloid reports in our own countries if can't hear their direct speech as it is the only way to really understand them.
Besides there are a lot of anti-Putin protests in Moscow just a couple of days ago protesters called on march towards Kremlin in an attempt to kick Putin out of there, they were also detained and released the same day. I think that if Pussy Riot get jail time it will be because of their protest in a holly place and not because it was against Putin.
