there are labor laws that are supposed to protect a child from working that many hours so that she would not have to miss school because she is exhausted. However, her obvious need for money with helping to raise her two siblings means that law would actually hurt her instead of helping.
Of course the authorities went about it the wrong way, sitting her in jail for truancy. But in the US helping her or her family would be considered welfare and she would be exploiting 'entitlement programs' which require taxes to pay for them. Here in the US people will be shocked and outraged that an honor roll student was jailed for missing school but slam the door fast and lose all sympathy if their taxes would go up 1% to help her, her family and millions more just like them.
