My granddad was really Jewish but fled to Spain in 1940 and joined the US Army when they landed in the south of Europe and he showed them the way to Berlin. We still have his US military passport and the photos he made including those of the hangings of collaborators.
I'm exactly like you, we had a lot of shit in our family due to this because his kids (including my mom) were put in foster homes during the occupation where they got messe up she the misery went on for a long time and a great way of dealing with it is by joking
