Dementia ...I never want to be like this !
We were on our way to Southampton and stoped off to get some petrol, As i got back into the drivers seat after filling up, this little nissan car comes rolling alongside me, The guy driving couldent get his car to start and it was just rolling forward very slowly with him trying to start it. I got back out and asked if he wanted a push and he just looked at me at first then said ok.
Another guy came over and helped and we pushed him out of the way of the petrol pumps and told him to put his car in 2nd gear and let the clutch up when the car was rolling a little faster. Well he dident do it, or dident seem to know how to do it.
We finally pushed his car to the side of the curb and asked if he had AA, he said he thinks he has, So we called them only to find out he dident. I then asked him where he lived and he also couldent remember his address. The guy seemed really confused and kept talking about a neighbour and that his wife had left him.
This guy was maybe in his 70s and he had a dog with him, we couldent just leave him stranded. So we called the police who never even bothered to turn up while we were there.
He did tell us his name but we later found out it was wrong after we looked in his glove compartment and found a birth certificate. We bought him a drink and got a chair from the petrol station as he wasent very steady on his feet and we were still waiting for the police to turn up.
In the end his carer turned up at the petrol station who was only there to buy his lunch and take it round to him.
We found out that he had dementia and he shouldent even be driving. His wife had passed away and he had no family.
I felt so sorry for him and if we hadent stoped to help, he would have just been left there and the amount of cars leaving the petrol station who totaly ignored him was a joke.
As for people of his age like this being on thier own .. it should never happen.
Dementia is one desease I never want
