I wanted one but decided against it. Get a Chevy Volt Instead.

The Chevy Volt. It is a front-wheel electric drive that can be plugged in to charge. When the batteries run out (38 Mile range according to EPA), the gasoline motor kicks in. The motor turns a generator to power the electric motor to drive the wheels. This gets you 37 Miles Per Gallon.

Gas millage on the Prius liftback is 50 MPG (vs Prius 42's gas engine). Sounds good at first, but in reality the standard Prius gets only 1 mile of electric range versus the Volt's 38 miles. The plug-in Prius get only 6 to 15 miles of battery range, and only if you keep it below 50 miles per hour.

Be a lead-foot in a prius and the gas engine will kick in automatically. But do it in a Chevy Volt and this does not happen because the batteries are better and the electic engine is more efficient. The software also stops this from happening.

(I tested this myself. It's pretty fast - faster than I thought it would be).

I'm still saving my pennies for a Tesla. http://teslamotors.com
