According the 2010 US census, out of a total population of 311 591 917 people, 115 289 009 people are racial minorities. Low income racial minorities consitute just under 60% (27 million) of the total low income population (46.2 million) of the US. I'm not sure how 27 million out of 115 million racial minority Americans consitutes "most", but the guy who wrote that can go with it, I guess. We should also probably ignore the almost 19 million low income white people in North America availing themselves of social assistance programs.
fact is, racial minorities in North America experience disproportionate rates of poverty and marginalization for reasons that are often partially predicated upon race and racism. The prison system is an excellent example. Sentences for racial minorities convicted of drug-related "crimes" (including simple possession) are much longer than those meted out to white defendants charged with the same crime. Add in disproportionate poverty and the general over-policing of Black and Latino males in particular, and it becomes a bit clear why prisons in North America disproportionately house racialized inmates.
No white person here on this forum would want to deal with the racism (both overt and systemic) that racialized men and women encounter as a fact of life. Which is the reason why I think the question asked in the OP is a great one. |
