For anyone interested in this sort of thing, check out the Arduino. I've been automating a lot of things with Arduino boards. Have a basic YouTube video up of one of my servo-based projects:
Eventually, it hooked up to a nerf gun that tracked and shot at people who walked into the room without flipping a switch. However, the latest Mac OS X update made the code not work, and I never got around to fixing it ... so I harvested the parts for other things.
