The public places a lot of trust in these 2 companies, and that trust is misplaced. With each censorship or privacy related issue that is flagged up, a drip-drip effect can be initiated that might erode public confidence over time. That IMO is a good thing, and it's also in the interests of a free and unfiltered internet that allows conspiracy theories to be espoused.
Conspiracy might make the world a scarier place, but it also makes the world a bigger place with more diversity of opinion. It's anti-Panda, anti-Penguin, anti-"login via Facebook to leave a comment". The filters that G and F use to shape the web, and shape opinion, need flagging up even if it's a false flag
