IMO what they should do as far as the regs go, is simply make any mag over 8 to 10 rounds illegal and punishable by stiff prison sentence (no pre-ban BS either straight up illegal). This would include handgun mags as well.

This way people can still have their toys but they just wont have the high capacity mags. If you can't hit a home intruder with 8 to 10 bullets then you likely shouldn't have the gun in the first place.

Granted it would be really hard to get all the high capacity mags out off the streets but if they could that would be a middle ground solution IMO.
