I think about 90% of kids with downs are aborted these days.
In order to detect it you have to perform an amniocentesis, which is quite risky for the child. We know two couples that had it done and lost the baby, (after finding out that the child was actually negative for downs anyway). My wife and I decided that, although we were at a higher risk for downs because of age, we were going to take whatever we got, and not take a chance on losing the baby during the test. It took us 5 years and 10s of thousands of dollars trying to get pregnant, and it finally happened naturally, and we were not going to snub the chance of a child, no matter what. My wife is a pediatric OT and works with small kids with all kinds of issues. She has seen how difficult it is for parents with kids that have downs, but even knowing all that, we still weren't going to risk the test, or consider abortion.
We know several parents that feel the same way, one couple that has a child with downs that are very glad, with all the problems, that they didn't abort.
Just sayin'
