The 3D printing option doesn't really demonstrably change anything at all. Realistically, nobody now has better access than they already had. The unbelievably small fraction of DIY/Makerbot enthusiasts are pretty much already skilled enough engineers to fabricate something with better functionality than this 3D template already, and the printer materials are kind of pricey, all other options considered. The only thing the 3D printer is actually fabricating is the perception of some sort of new threat.
Now, the fact that the printer can be used to output various parts on demand is useful, whether you are fixing your AR or your washing machine, but that's a different discussion.
