I grew up in a similar area. I would say it's probably common in small towns all over the US. I knew plenty of people who did this sort of pack-rat thing on old farm land. Some collected for a hobby and others collected stuff to resell for antiques or scrap. I didn't think it was that weird until all these shows started springing up like American Pickers and Storage Wars.
