What is the difference between drop box and mega?
You upload files to both services and then you share the files.

Mega have a number of problems:
1. A large number of potentially illegal files.
2. The refusal to block (as they originally promised) search results from Mega-Search.me and other file search engines.
3. They have not demonstrated the same commitment to combating copyright infringement than is demonstrated by other legitimate cloud hosting services.
4. The only difference between them selling access to copyright content and not is the amount of free downloads available to non members of the site, Kim Dotcom can reduce the threshold at any time and then you will have MegaUpload MkII
There are other issues also that I will not discuss publicly as we do not wish to provide Mega with insight into how we will combat them.

How long has he been trying this? Anyone see any impact on sales because of it? I've not seen any case studies.

In the past twelve months the number of file lockers accepting Paypal has gone from hundreds to just a few.
You have remarked yourself that the Epoch Paypal trial has produced some impressive sales numbers from Paypal, cutting off that source of income has mortally wounded most file lockers and leaves others dying.
