I have only purchased new wheels twice, but both times the old wheels were kind of old and average the tire place acted like they were just going to keep them. The first time I did this I paid the tire place to put my tires on the new wheels and put them on car. They did so. When I was getting ready to pay them I told them to just put the old wheels in the trunk and they looked at me like I was speaking Klingon. I think they just assumed they wee keeping them. I then told them I wanted to keep them to use for snow tires.
The second time as I was picking out the new wheels they offered to "recycle" my old wheels free of charge.
The bottom line is they are your wheels, you don't owe him anything, but if you feel he went above and beyond for you and you have no use for those old wheels it might be a nice gesture to let them keep them.
