I haven't been paying too much attention to what's been going on state wide here. I've been paying more attention to local politics and how my hometown is doing.
Right before the recession hit were on a massive upswing. We were the fastest growing community in the US. When the recession hit our town went broke. We haven't gone through bankruptcy yet, but it's interesting to watch our local government try to come up with money. For example, we had a huge police department and a low crime rate - they cut the police department and crime shot up. Now we are cutting our local fire department - closing down entire fire stations - and limiting the amount of maintenance our parks get. The new catch phrase is "natural cut grass" which roughly translates into "this grass is hard to get to, so instead we'll just let it grow until further notice".
