In studio either one is a great choice

In a harsh environment (desert, rain, snow, sand, salt air) Nikon all the way. There is a reason that photojournalists the world over have sworn by Nikon for decades and that reason is they are workhorses.

I did a shoot in the desert in red rock canyon we had a nikon D-100 and the equivalent canon...the canon got sand in it from the wind within an hour and quit working...the Nikon still works to this day.

Thats the real reason to go Nikon....
How come canon engineers can not overcome this obvious (as you imply) disadvantage and make their cameras as good in those environments?
