Jetliner Explodes Over Ukraine; Struck by Missile, Officials Say

Malaysia Airlines 17, which was carrying 298 people onboard, was shot down by a surface-to-air missile that might have been Russian made, American officials said.
Russia?s president, Vladimir V. Putin, blamed Ukraine?s government for creating what he called conditions for insurgency in eastern Ukraine, where separatists have bragged about shooting down at least three Ukrainian military aircraft. But Mr. Putin did not specifically deny that a Russian-made weapon had felled the Malaysian jetliner.

Local residents and rescue workers saw smoldering debris litter miles of sparsely populated Ukrainian farmland after Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 crashed. Residents spoke of bodies falling from the sky, looking like rags or clumps of ash, before the plane came to a jolting rest in a large wheat field, having trailed debris over several miles of sparsely populated Ukrainian farmland.
